Polymeric sand coverage guide

Updated April 26, 2026

Quick answer

A 50 lb bag of polymeric sand covers about 100 sqft of 12×12 pavers with standard ⅛–¼ inch joints. Smaller pavers, wider joints, and irregular shapes use more, figure roughly 1 bag per 60–80 sqft for 6×6 pavers in a herringbone pattern. Always install on a fully dry patio with no rain in the 24-hour forecast.

Formula

Bags of polymeric sand

bags = ceil( patio_sqft / coverage_per_bag )

Add 10% extra for: herringbone, irregular paver shapes,
joints over ¼ in, and any project where you don't want
to drive back to the store mid-install.
Polymeric sand can't be reused once it gets wet. Buy what you'll use that day and return unopened bags.

Worked example

200 sqft patio with 12×12 pavers

Standard backyard patio, ⅛-inch joints, running bond.

  1. 1. Coverage rate (12×12, ⅛ in)100 sqft/bag
  2. 2. Bags = 200 / 1002 bags
  3. 3. + 1 bag insurance3 bags

Buy 3 × 50 lb bags. Return any unopened.

Worked example

240 sqft herringbone with 6×9 pavers

More joints, more sand. 45° herringbone, ⅛-inch joints.

  1. 1. Coverage rate (6×9, ⅛ in)75 sqft/bag
  2. 2. Bags = 240 / 753.2 bags
  3. 3. + 10% (herringbone factor)3.5 bags
  4. 4. Round up4 bags

Buy 4 bags, herringbone with small pavers nearly doubles joint length.

How to install polymeric sand (the right way)

  1. Surface must be completely dry, no morning dew, no rain in the forecast for 24 hours.
  2. Sweep sand into joints with a stiff-bristle push broom. Fill joints completely, slightly above the chamfer.
  3. Use a plate compactor with a rubber mat to vibrate sand down into joints. Re-sweep more sand into the gaps that open up. Repeat until joints stay full.
  4. Blow off all loose sand from the paver surface, any residue will harden into a haze you can't easily remove.
  5. Mist with water, light shower, not a stream. Activator chemicals need water to set; too much washes the sand out.
  6. Wait 24 hours before walking, 48 hours before driving on it.

Common mistakes (and how to avoid them)

Skipping the blow-off step before watering.

Fix: Any sand left on paver faces will polymerize into a permanent haze. Blow with a leaf blower until the surface looks completely clean, only then mist with water.

Using a hose stream to activate the sand.

Fix: Mist only, three short passes with a fan-spray nozzle. A direct stream washes the activator and sand out of joints. The bag instructions are not optional.

Installing in damp or humid conditions.

Fix: Pavers must be 100% dry. Polymeric sand starts to set the moment it touches moisture, even morning dew. Install on a hot, dry day with 24+ dry hours forecast.

Filling joints only partway.

Fix: Joints must be filled to within ⅛ in of the paver top. Half-filled joints cure into a thin shell that breaks under foot traffic within months.

Reopening the bag a week later for a touch-up.

Fix: Once polymeric sand is exposed to humidity, it starts curing. An opened bag is dead in 1–2 weeks. Plan a single install session and dispose of leftovers.

Frequently asked questions

How much area does a bag of polymeric sand cover?
50 lb bag covers ~100 sqft of standard 12×12 pavers with ⅛-inch joints. Less for smaller pavers, more for larger ones.
How many bags for a 200 sqft patio?
2 bags at 12×12; 3 bags for 8×8 or smaller; bump to 3-4 for herringbone or wide joints. Always buy one extra.
Polymeric sand vs regular paver sand?
Polymeric contains a binder that hardens with water, locks pavers together and resists weeds and ant tunnels. Regular sand is cheaper but washes out and lets weeds grow. Polymeric is worth the upgrade on any visible patio.
How long does polymeric sand last?
8–10 years if installed correctly. Sealed pavers can last 15+. Most failures are install errors, not product failures.
How long until I can walk on polymeric sand?
24 hours for foot traffic, 48 hours for vehicles. Don't pressure-wash for at least 30 days, the polymer continues to cure.
Can I install polymeric sand over old jointing sand?
Only if you remove the top inch of old sand first. New polymeric needs to bond with paver edges, not with loose old sand. Use a screwdriver or sand removal tool.
